The Oceans Beyond Piracy project looks to develop a multi-stakeholder response to piracy through:
- Mobilization of all affected sectors of the maritime community
- Developing public-private partnerships that promote long-term solutions at sea and ashore
- Global and sustainable deterrence based on the rule of law

Pirates captured the MT Abu Dhabi Star off the west coast of Africa on September 5, 2012. The ship and its crew of 23 Indian crewmen was freed by a Nigerian naval ship one day later, on September 6, 2012. It is unclear if the pirates took any of the cargo onboard the vessel.
