The legal system in Cote d'Ivoire is a dualist system based on both French civil law and local customary law. Cote d'Ivoire criminalizes piracy in its Merchant Marine Code. The law is modeled on old French colonial law. The Code of Merchant Shipping of Côte d’Ivoire, Law No. 61349, criminalizes acts of piracy and specifies the punishments for such acts at Articles 228-238.
