The above is one of my favorite quotes by Andy Weir. I can see you rolling your eyes at me wondering, ‘Just how shallow is this guy?’ Well, I know it’s such a meaningless quote, but let’s admit it, it’s also kinda funny. The first time I read it, I expected a profound thing to follow, but what followed was absolutely nothin’. Haha. Come on, just laugh. Okay, smile. Thank you!

I’m currently in Malibu and my book for this trip is Andy Weir’s ‘The Martian’ where this quote is from. I love it, so far.

It’s about a fictional astronaut, who is one of the first people to land on Mars. He might also become the first person to die on Mars after a dust storm forces his teammates to evacuate the planet, leaving him behind thinking he’s dead.

I can’t tell you how it ends, but I can share with you some amazing places I’ve visited in Malibu.

1. The Getty Villa

The Getty Villa is designed to resemble an Italian villa; it serves today as a museum that houses Paul Getty’s collection of more than 44,000 Roman, Greek, and other classical civilizations artifacts and an educational center.

• Why you should go:

The Getty Villa serves as a campus for the UCLA’s Getty Master’s Program in Archaeological and Ethnographic Conservation. The permanent collection is on view in 23 galleries, while five more galleries show rotating exhibits. 

The outdoor of this stunning Villa is surrounded by a beautiful garden filled with roses and English ivy, with several  Roman statues nestled among the greenery.

Wander through the Villa’s astonishing exhibits, or catch one of the performances, lectures, and events held in the Villa.

2. Zuma Beach

While driving along the Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu, you won’t be able to resist making a stop and stepping onto the fine taupe sands of Zuma beach. Unlike other beaches in Malibu, there are no residential buildings on its shores.

• Why you should go:

One of the largest, most popular, and most beautiful beaches in Malibu, Zuma Beach is often considered one of the top attractions in Malibu. Zuma Beach’s vast golden sands, and gentle waves beckon beach lovers to go surfing, swimming, scuba diving, building sandcastles, and fishing.

You and your family or friends will love all the fun things to do at Zuma Beach. On top of the beach activities, there’s also bodyboarding, kiteboarding, bodysurfing, windsurfing, and beach volleyball.

4. Westward Beach

Much quieter and secluded than Zuma Beach, Westward Beach is a sandy stretch of beach on the west side of Point Dume, with fine white sand and clear blue waters.

Westward is perfect for swimming, surfing, sunbathing, and fishing, with sea cliffs sticking out into the ocean shadowing the beach. There are many facilities, like showers, restrooms, picnic tables, and the famous restaurant The Sunset.

There are several hiking trails from Westward Beach leading up to Point Dume Natural Preserve. Westward Beach is great for spotting seals, dolphins, and sea lions.

5. Adamson House

Rating: 4.5 ★ 

Location: 23200 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu.

The entry fees: $7 for adults, $2 for children (6-17), and free for children 5 and under.

• Beautiful tile work.

Built in 1929, Adamson is a Spanish Colonial house inspired by Mediterranean Revival style with incredible views of Surfrider Beach and rich landscaped grounds.

The Adamson House’s outdoor and surrounding landscape shows off a vibrant Mediterranean scene, and a rustic countryside charm fills the house indoors.

The house is covered with charming tiles in rich oranges, blues, yellows, and greens created in the renowned Malibu Potteries.

6. Malibu Hindu Temple

7. Malibu Country Mart

Founded in 1975, the Malibu Country Mart is located right in the Malibu Civic Center. 

• Why you should go:

Malibu Country Mart is a six-acre unique mix of upscale boutiques, high-end shopping, dining, and playing options; it is also where you can get pampered, have a fancy meal, get a designer gown, or even check out the latest show at the gallery.

The Country Mart has a variety of buildings of mixed styles such as rustic, Spanish, Mediterranean, and modern. The facilities are surrounded by charming gardens dotted with original sculptures,  kids’ playgrounds, and picnic areas.

8. Point Dume State Beach and Preserve

Point Dume State Beach and Preserve is a stunning sandy beach decorated by the overhanging cliffs and headlands, with rocky coves and vast expanses of soft white sand.

Point Dume is perfect for swimming, surfing, scuba diving, and fishing. It is also a popular spot to watch California gray whales during their migration between December and April.

A hiking trail takes hikers to the unique scenery of coastal bluff dunes. The bluff offers breathtaking views of the Malibu Coast, Santa Monica Bay, Santa Monica Mountains, and Catalina Island. 

Near the summit, you will find a boardwalk with a viewing platform and a stairway that leads to some small secluded beaches and tidepools.

Point Dume State Beach is a hidden gem with its views of Santa Monica Bay and Catalina Island in the distance.

Despite the rocky features, you will find lots of recreational activities in Point Dume and easily accessible facilities.

9. Paradise Cove Beach Cafe

Paradise Cove Beach Cafe is right on the beach of Malibu, almost to Point Dume.

The inside of the cafe has funky booths with beach-inspired vibes and large windows overlooking Paradise Cove Beach.

You can choose the lounge chairs right on the beach, giving you a chance to enjoy their popular Fruit Boba Drinks and take in the Malibu sunshine with your feet in the sand. The menu has various choices, with seafood options and BBQ specialties.

10. Malibu Pier

• A picturesque spot along the 101.

If you’re an eager angler looking for the best spot in Malibu, then Malibu Pier is the place for you, which is next to the popular Surfrider Beach. Cheerful and vibrant, it provides an excellent spot for people to sit or stand and watch the surfers at their craft.

The Malibu Pier is dotted with brackets for fishing reels and rods. The pier is also a pleasant place for a walk, especially just before the sunset or sunrise. There are also several restaurants on the pier offering seafood, wine, cocktails, and great views.

13. Escondido Falls

The Escondido Falls drops from a 150-foot cliff, which is the highest in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Escondido Falls is best visited in the early months of the year. It takes an adventure through 4.2 miles of riparian woodland, oak woodland, and coastal sage scrub to be rewarded with incredible scenery.

18. Solstice Canyon

20. Point Mugu State Park

Parker Mesa Overlook offers quite a bit of scenery over the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains below a high elevation. Parker Mesa is a well-known viewpoint of the Pacific Coast in Topanga State Park. A pair of benches have been provided, so take a seat and enjoy the panoramic view.

Parker Mesa Overlook Trail is a 6.8-miles-trail that features delightful wildflowers and picturesque views. The trail also offers several activities and is accessible year-round.

23. Malibu Lagoon State Beach

Nestled somewhere in the Santa Monica Mountains, the movie ranch served as a set for different viral Hollywood movies during the Golden Age, including Gunsmoke and American Sniper, and some popular television shows including Carnivàle, and more recently Westworld.

Today, Paramount Ranch remains one of the most interesting places near Malibu, with its Western locations and buildings. It is definitely worth exploring for everyone. However, movie lovers should add it to their list of things to do in Malibu.
